In a Nutshell - July 28th

The weekly low-down of Manchester goodness.

One of Large's favourite people, Clint Boon is currently filming a short promotional film promoting the Salford music map.

There could be a huge sigh as fears that the hosepipe ban may remain in place until the autumn, even until Christmas! Despite the characteristic Manchester rain.

Coronation Street memorabilia goes or £844 at auction. Not too bad for something relating to the flagship soap from Manchester you may think. However the £844 is for the ashes of Frisky, the cat that featured in the title sequence of over 1000 episodes eying up Jack Duckworth’s pigeons.

Workmen painting double yellow lines on the streets of Manchester happened upon a few obstacles along the way, and in true Manchester style came up with a cunning plan to overcome them. Cars were parked on Little Quay street, but this didn’t stop the workmen, who simply hoisted the cars out of the way whilst they painted the lines and then placed the cars back (the wrong way!). To add to insult to injury, the vehicles were also issued with a parking ticket.

Manchester council look set to continue the free swimming scheme for children and OAP’s, despite the government ending the free swim funding. This continuing initiative is one of the topics up for discussion during the current council meetings, and its hoped that the people of Manchester can continue the popular past time.

The homeless people of Manchester are to be given Sun cream to prevent sun burn and armful UV rays affecting their skin. The rays can be effective even on overcast days, and those at risk include Big Issue sellers.

New Order bassist Peter Hook will join forces with other leading musicians including Peter Gabriel to host a music talent TV show. Manchester’s Mark Radcliffe was voted 5th in TV’s most unlikeliest sex symbols according to a recent poll. The Radio 2 DJ and presenter was deemed an unlikely sex symbol due to him being, “a resolutely unglamorous professional Northerner.” Credentials in his favour however are, “a touch of the rough-and-ready gamekeeper with a passion for music and a winning sense of humour". Mark was beaten to the prestigious - or undesirable award - by, Gordon Ramsey, Anne Robinson and Justin Lee Collins.

Manchester Airport aims to be the greenest airport in Europe. Its 5 year aim is to become carbon neutral with initiatives already in place. There are concerns that the plan does not include aircraft - they are the responsibility of the airlines.

Harry Hill has contributed to a new exhibition in Manchester’s Corner House. The exhibition titled 'Unreleased Potential' explores the creative potential of artists.

Ian Brown is hot-footing it across the globe expanding his international tour to take in the exotic island of Bali! Something tells us that a bit of R & R might be thrown is also for good measure.
